There is nothing you can do to prevent a natural disaster, but there are many things you can do to prepare for one. Being prepared will help you keep your family safe and minimize damage during an emergency. Here’s what you need to do:

Evaluate The Risks In Your Area

Different areas are prone to different risks. For example, here in Florida we need to prepare for hurricanes, floods, and storms, while homeowners in California need to prepare for earthquakes and fires.

Upgrade And Maintain Your Home

Maintaining your home and making some smart upgrades can make a big difference during a natural disaster. Investing in storm shutters/laminated glass, and keeping gutters clear is never a bad idea in our hurricane prone state.

Talk To Your Family About An Emergency Plan

Make sure your family members know what to do in an emergency. Create a plan. Discuss your evacuation route, where everyone should go to reunite, and how you will communicate.

Create An Emergency Kit

Prepare an emergency kit to take with you in the event of a natural disaster. Below are some examples of items you might want to include:

  • 2 gallons of water per person for about three days
  • Non-perishable food like granola bars and dried fruit
  • Pet food
  • Toilet paper, diapers, wipes, and other hygiene supplies
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • A Radio
  • A fully stocked first aid kit with any necessary prescription medications
  • Matches
  • Waterproof blankets or ponchos
  • Extra clothes
  • Cash
  • Important documents such as passports
  • Cell phones and chargers

Spend the time on Insurance

Although some damage can be prevented, there is only so much you can do to be prepared. This is why it is essential to invest the time to properly set up your insurance, especially considering we live where natural disasters are a real threat.. Consider speaking to us about your home insurance and additional policies such as flood insurance to make sure your most valuable assets are properly protected.
