Home burglaries can result in destruction of property, loss of valuable items and lots of stress. While you can’t completely control the actions of others, there are many things you can do to deter burglars. In most cases, burglars are looking for easy targets, which means they strike when no one is at home. Find out how to protect your home, even when you’re out of town.

Don’t Advertise Your Vacation Dates

You may be excited about your vacation, but don’t spread too much information about your plans. Posting about your vacation on social networks, can let hundreds of people know that your home is unattended. Even if you trust your close friends, the odds are high that there are people in your social networks who you don’t know very well.  Wait to tell your online friends about your trip until after you’ve returned home.

Make Your Home Look Lived In

You may be away from home, but potential burglars don’t have to notice. Use the following tips to make your home look occupied:

  •         Set your lights on a timer so that they go on during the day while you’re gone.
  •         Have the post office hold your mail so an overflowing mailbox doesn’t tip off burglars to your absence.
  •         Have someone mow your lawn if you’ll be gone for more than a week.
  •         If possible, have a house sitter come stay or stop by the house occasionally while you’re gone.

Eliminate Hiding Places

Make it harder for burglars to make it to your home by eliminating hiding places. Keep bushes away from your house, trim your trees, and install motion activated outdoor lighting.

Follow the advice above to keep your property safe even when you’re away. For more advice, contact your local police department.
